Grace Church Naples does not offer Divorce Support Care Groups. We believe Scripture is clear: God designed marriage as a sacred, lifelong covenant between one man and one woman (Genesis 2:24, Matthew 19:6, Malachi 2:16). “What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.” Supporting the dissolution of marriage would contradict the very Word we are called to uphold. We stand with the Bible — one marriage, for life.

Nurturing Legacy in a Digital World: The Importance of Family Traditions

By Pastor David Kheeler

Dear Grace Church Family,

As I reflect on my journey as a father and now a grandfather of 14 cherished grandchildren, I am often reminded of the intricate dance we navigate in raising our children amidst the relentless tide of the digital age. Our children are besieged by screens, social media, and a culture that often seems at odds with the values we hold dear. Yet, as we face these challenges, we must remain steadfast in preserving our family traditions that serve as a bridge to our faith and legacy.

In the eyes of God, marriage is a sacred covenant and the family unit is the very fabric of our society. Ephesians 5:31-33 reminds us that "a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh." This foundational truth extends beyond just the union of husband and wife; it encompasses the entire family.

One of the traditions that I hold dear is our Sunday family dinners. This ritual, simple yet profound, offers us an opportunity to gather around the table, breaking bread and sharing our lives. The laughter of my grandchildren fills the room as stories are exchanged and lessons are imparted. These moments not only strengthen our family bonds but also serve as a time for devotions, where we reflect on the Word of God. In those shared meals, I see the legacy of faith we are building, as Proverbs 22:6 states, "Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old, he will not depart from it."

In the frenzy of busy schedules and digital distractions, it is vital that we establish boundaries regarding screen time. I have seen firsthand how excessive exposure to screens can distract from meaningful interactions. As parents and grandparents, we must become guardians of our children’s time, guiding them towards a balanced approach to technology. Let’s encourage them to prioritize moments of connection over consumption, ensuring that our homes resonate with conversations rather than the hum of devices.

Moreover, the role of grandparents cannot be overstated. With wisdom that comes from years of experience, we have a unique opportunity to impart valuable lessons and to model faithfulness in relationships. My grandchildren often seek me out for stories from my life, tales that weave together the threads of faith, family, and tradition. I share with them the importance of our family values and how they shape our identity. Just as Psalm 127:3-5 declares, "Children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward," let us embrace this reward and invest in our children’s futures with love and care.

In navigating the modern challenges of raising our children in a digital age, we must remain anchored in our faith, building a legacy that emphasizes the importance of family traditions. Let us remember that these traditions are the bedrock of our faith and culture. Together, we can create an environment where our children thrive—one that reflects Christ's love in our homes.

May we continue to gather together, share our lives, and cultivate the faith that will guide our children and grandchildren for generations to come.

In Christ’s love,
